Almost two decades down the road he was assassinates by Somoza’s goonies.
Today his daughter Cristiana has picked the freedom gauntlet severely damaged not only by Daniel Ortega and his sorceress wife but by the people of her social standing that chose to enrich themselves at the cost of stripping democracy in Nicaragua.
Knowing Cristiana for three decades I could recite her thinking and her vision for her country. She simply believes that Nicaraguans deserve better than what they are getting. In the digital age they could access quality education. Telemedicine could resolve many health care dilemmas while disseminating prevention methods. She also believes in transparency in public office. In short , she incarnates a very much needed modern leadership in Latin America , a region that has not scored a single development success since Mr. Colon visited.
And these beliefs as well as the grief of her people are the fuel behind her jump into the electoral race . But contrary to her mother who was also driven by the same principles , Cristiana might be the next martyr in the Nicaraguan drama. She would thus follow her father’s footsteps.
And barring an assassination which is a remote possibility given that the Chamorro candidacy threatens one too many material interests in Nicaragua, she will be ferociously attacked by Ortega and his followers; the Nicaraguan elite that thrives under Ortega and practitioners of black magic. Those attacks aim at creating a negative narrative around Ms Chamorro with a view to destroy he reputation and her chances to outnumber Ortega in the fraudulent elections he is organizing. Ms Chamorro will accordingly be subject to a character assassination campaign and economic dispossession. All these weapons targeting at either keeping her from registering her candidacy and running or from achieving victory on the electoral race. In short, Ms Chamorro will be the victim of modern days martyrdom which aims at stealing from rivals their reputation and their wellbeing.
The war already started with the accusation of money laundering through the Violeta Chamorro foundation. The exact charge revolves around the receipt of grants from American non profits at a time when Cristiana was the foundation’s Executive Director. Next will probably come a charge that she has eluded taxation. And a complete rosary of false accusations will thrive up an until she gives up on the presidential run or is wrongly disqualified to run.
Meanwhile the Nicaraguan elite; the hemispheric community and the democracy watchdogs such as the OAs will simply look the other way giving Ortega the free pass to complete the murder of democracy in Nicaragua.
